Silent Soliloquy
6 September - 6 October 2007

In winter of 2006 when Tamarind Art Gallery showcased Kamal Mitra through a group
show, Mitra took the New York art scene with a storm. An introvert by nature, Mitra
mesmerized the audience by painting in situ at the opening reception. Guests crowded
around his easel as images began to appear from the blank, white canvas. This Fall,
to the delight of his admirers, collectors and art lovers, Mitra is going solo at
Tamarind Art.

What make Mitra's paintings so conspicuously striking from his contemporaries is his
very detailed style and the hypnotic gaze of the protagonist alluring the viewer to
enter into his paintings. In Mitra's paintings the male body plays a vital role, but
it is the portrayal of the body by implication rather than mere imitation, which
makes these paintings so palpable.

Opening reception: 6 September 2007 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm

About the Artist
Mitra received his postgraduate degree from Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan in 1993. Since
then he has participated in a number of group exhibitions and is the recipient of
several awards including the Junior Fellowship, Under Ministry of Culture, Govt. of
India from 2000 - 2002 and the drawing award from the Govt of West Bengal in 1996
among others.
